CIPM, Imo Government Seal Partnership on Civil Service Reforms and Workforce Development

By Deborah Bodunde

The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Imo State Government on civil service professionalisation and workforce reforms, as part of efforts to strengthen human capital development in the state.

This commitment was made during a courtesy visit by a delegation of the Institute to the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Dr. Chinyere Ekomaru, at the Government House, Owerri, where she received them on behalf of Governor Hope Uzodimma.

Dr. Ekomaru commended the Institute for its leadership in promoting professionalism and capacity development across Nigeria’s workforce, noting that the Uzodimma administration has made human capital development a cornerstone of governance.

“Governor Hope Uzodimma believes in empowering people. His administration has prioritised workers’ welfare and skills development—from prompt salary payments, free healthcare insurance and transport services, to continuous training and digital upskilling through the SkillUp Imo programme,” she said.

She disclosed that more than 40,000 Imo youths have benefited from the SkillUp Imo initiative, adding that the state government is constructing a Digital Village to position Imo as Nigeria’s emerging digital hub.

The Deputy Governor assured the CIPM delegation of the government’s readiness to work with the Institute to enhance competence within the civil service and professionalise the human resource cadre across the public sector.

Representing the CIPM President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mallam Ahmed Gobir, the Institute’s National Treasurer, Mrs. Ogochukwu Egbuonu, commended the Imo State Government for its people-oriented initiatives.

“As the drivers of governance and human capital in Imo State, His Excellency and Her Excellency embody what CIPM stands for—leadership, innovation, and impact through people,” she stated.

Egbuonu highlighted CIPM’s statutory role as Nigeria’s sole regulatory body for human resource management and its growing international recognition. She noted that the Institute now has more than 20,000 members across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.

She also extended an invitation to Governor Uzodimma to attend the forthcoming 57th International Conference and Exhibition of the Institute, themed “Reimagining the New World of Work”, scheduled to hold from 27–30 October 2025 at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Delivering the President’s message, Gobir commended the Imo State Government for its digital skills and youth empowerment initiatives through the SkillUp Imo programme, which has already graduated 10,000 young people.

“CIPM stands ready to work hand in hand with the Government of Imo State to reimagine the new world of work, professionalise the workforce, and deliver an efficient, modern public service worthy of the State’s motto,” he said.

The visit concluded with the presentation of the official CIPM 2025 International Conference bag to the Deputy Governor, symbolising partnership, shared purpose and progress.
