Over 8,000 Nigerians Access ₦39.86bn Pension Funds for Mortgages in Q1 2025

A total of 8,408 Retirement Savings Account (RSA) holders accessed ₦39.86 billion as equity contributions for residential mortgages in the first quarter of 2025, the Pension Fund Operators Association of Nigeria (PenOp) has revealed.

Chief Executive Officer of PenOp, Mr. Oguche Agudah, disclosed this in an interview on Tuesday. He said the figure reflects a significant increase in both value and participation compared to previous years.

In 2024, only 1,390 contributors accessed ₦10.52 billion. This represents a 279 per cent increase in disbursements and a 505 per cent rise in beneficiaries in 2025.

Compared to the fourth quarter of 2024, when 2,491 beneficiaries accessed ₦18 billion, the Q1 2025 numbers show a 32 per cent increase in value and 18 per cent growth in participation.

Agudah attributed the surge to greater awareness of the policy, improved access through pension fund administrators, and rising demand for affordable housing.

“More Nigerians are realising that pensions are not only a retirement safety net but also a powerful tool for unlocking home ownership today,” he said.

According to him, the contributory pension scheme is helping Nigerians secure homes, build stability, and deepen financial inclusion nationwide.
