The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has commended the governments of Imo and Ebonyi States for increasing their minimum wages, describing the move as timely and responsive to workers’ welfare.
NECA’s Director-General, Mr. Adewale-SmattOyerinde, gave the commendation on Thursday in Lagos, noting that the adjustments reflected recognition of the value of workers and may have been facilitated by increased allocations from the federation account.
“We commend the action of the governments in addressing the dwindling purchasing power of workers,” Oyerinde said.
“We hope other states will follow the same path in the days ahead. This action demonstrates responsiveness to the welfare of the workers,” he added.
On Tuesday, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State announced a new minimum wage of ₦104,000 for civil servants, up from ₦76,000. Similarly, the Ebonyi State Government on Thursday approved an increase from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000, according to Information and Orientation Commissioner, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe.
NECA emphasised that the decisions send a strong signal of government commitment to easing the impact of inflation on workers and urged other states to adopt similar measures.
