PenCom, Police in Joint Move to Overhaul Officers’ Pensions

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have launched a joint initiative to improve police officers’ pensions and welfare under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

The collaboration was announced in a statement issued by PenCom following a courtesy visit by its Director-General, Omolola Oloworaran, to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in Abuja.

Oloworaran stressed the importance of closer cooperation between the two institutions to resolve pension-related challenges and enhance retirement benefits. She noted that the CPS was created to replace the underfunded and opaque Defined Benefits Scheme (DBS), which left many retirees in hardship.

Proposed reforms under the CPS include a Health Insurance Scheme for retirees, raising pensions to 75 per cent of final salary, expanding the Retirement Resettlement Fund, and restructuring police pensions. She rejected calls to withdraw the police from the CPS, describing such a move as “unnecessary and counterproductive,” and urged the Federal Government to increase its pension contribution for officers from 10 to 20 per cent.

PenCom is also working with the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation to introduce a Gratuity Scheme in 2026, granting treasury-funded federal workers a one-year total emolument as a gratuity upon retirement.

Egbetokun welcomed PenCom’s reforms and pledged the police’s cooperation, affirming his commitment to protecting officers’ welfare and sustaining public trust.
