Oba of Lagos Endorses Labour Ministry’s Campaign Against Child Labour in Nigeria

The Oba of Lagos, Alayeluwa Oba Riliwanu Akiolu, has endorsed the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment’s campaign to eliminate child labour in Nigeria, calling for stronger family values, moral education, and more productive youth engagement.

He made these remarks during a courtesy visit by the Lagos State Controller of Labour, Iteamagbo E.A, and senior ministry officials to the Iga Idunganran Palace on Lagos Island.

Highlighting the importance of the visit, Controller Iteamagbo said the ministry sought the collaboration of traditional leaders to tackle the increasing incidence of child labour and youth vulnerability across Lagos communities.

“The palace is not just a symbol of culture; it is an institution of influence,” he stated. “Engaging traditional rulers helps take sensitisation efforts directly to the grassroots.”

Oba Akiolu warned that Nigerian youths are facing serious societal challenges, including drug abuse, idleness, and the erosion of moral and religious values. He urged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to intensify its fight against drug misuse, and called on the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to step up its youth reorientation programmes.

“Our problem is that we are too far from God,” the monarch said. “The youths must be mentored. Don’t just give them fish—teach them how to fish.”

He recommended that the Labour Ministry strengthen links between its state coordinators and both schools and religious institutions, with regular inspections and public campaigns highlighting the dangers of child labour.

When asked about the role of parenting, the Oba emphasised the importance of early home training, self-discipline, and moral upbringing.

“Parents must instil values from a young age. That’s how children grow up responsible enough to support their own families,” he said.
“A better future starts now – with constant monitoring and investment in children.”

He further warned that greed is eroding societal values and urged the media to play an active role through public education and constructive criticism.

The Oba, who is currently preparing a traditional guidance document for the newly elected chairman of Lagos Island, gave his blessing to the ministry’s efforts and advocated for deeper partnerships between government agencies and cultural institutions.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment is expected to expand its child labour sensitisation campaign in the coming weeks, focusing on schools, traditional institutions, and community gatekeepers.
