NAAT Threatens Nationwide Protests Over Withheld Salaries, Wage Issues

The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, threatening a series of nationwide protests in August 2025 over outstanding salary arrears and unaddressed welfare concerns.

According to a statement by NAAT President, Ibeji Nwokoma, the union plans to begin mass mobilisation ahead of protests scheduled for 6, 13, and 20 August. The actions stem from the government’s failure to pay three and a half months’ salaries and to implement agreed consequential adjustments to the national minimum wage.

The statement clarified that all NAAT branches had been directed to sensitise and mobilise members in preparation for the protests, which could culminate in a national demonstration in Abuja if the government fails to act.

NAAT had earlier issued a 21-day ultimatum in June, demanding immediate action on welfare issues and improved working conditions in federal universities. The deadline expired on 4 July with no meaningful response from government officials.

At its 59th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Yobe State University in Damaturu, the union condemned what it described as the government’s indifferent attitude towards the plight of academic technologists.

The union reiterated its call for the full payment of withheld salaries, the prompt implementation of minimum wage adjustments, and urgent improvements to university working conditions.

It also appealed to the general public, religious and traditional leaders, lawmakers, and other stakeholders to intervene and urge the government to address these issues. According to the association, such timely intervention is necessary to preserve the fragile peace currently prevailing across Nigerian university campuses.
