ALGON to Striking Workers: We’ve Started Paying ₦70,000 Minimum Wage – Return to Work

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has appealed to striking workers to resume duties, stating that all six area councils have commenced payment of the new ₦70,000 minimum wage.

ALGON Chairman and Kwali Area Council Chairman, Mr. Danladi Chiya, made the call at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday. Members of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) are currently on strike over delayed implementation of the new wage.

Chiya said the strike has kept schoolchildren at home, a situation he described as deeply concerning.

“We are not in conflict with anyone, but our primary concern is the children who have been forced to stay at home,” he said. “We urge the unions to allow the children to return to school. The door remains open for dialogue.”

Also speaking, ALGON Secretary and Chairman of Bwari Area Council, Mr. John Gabaya, echoed the call for workers to return to their posts.

“This press conference is a plea to all stakeholders to return to the negotiation table,” Gabaya said. “We urge the unions to end the strike so we can collectively pursue our shared goals and objectives.”
