ASUU Supports 12 Indigent Students with Scholarships

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has awarded scholarships to 12 academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students across its Bauchi Zone.

The Bauchi Zone comprises Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) Bauchi, Gombe State University, Federal University Kashere, University of Jos, and Plateau State University, Bokkos.

The scholarship presentation ceremony took place on Saturday at the ASUU Secretariat, SAZU Bauchi. Each beneficiary received a cheque of ₦200,000 from the Union’s national body.

Professor Christopher Piwuna, Convener of the ASUU Grant, Research and Publications Committee, was represented by Professor Lawan Abubakar, the immediate past Zonal Coordinator.

Piwuna stated that the scholarship scheme was introduced to support bright students facing financial hardship.

“This initiative arose in response to the government’s increasing imposition of school fees, which continues to place a heavy burden on students and their families,” he said.

He emphasised that ASUU views the support as a grant and not a loan, adding: “We do not expect any repayment from either the beneficiaries or their parents.”

Also speaking, the Zonal Coordinator, Professor Namo Aku, revealed that while the national body awarded scholarships to 12 students, the six universities in the zone collectively sponsored an additional 18 indigent students.

“ATBU and Gombe State University sponsored five students each; Plateau State University and the University of Jos sponsored two each; while SAZU and Federal University Kashere each sponsored two students,” he said.

Aku reiterated that ASUU’s mission includes supporting underprivileged students through the collective efforts and contributions of lecturers committed to student success.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Bappa Salisu, a Pharmacy student at SAZU, expressed gratitude to the Union.

“We are immensely grateful for this opportunity. It inspires us to work harder and meet the expectations of those who believe in us,” he said.
