The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Gombe State Council, has called on Governor Inuwa Yahaya to implement the N70,000 minimum wage for local government workers.
Chairman of the Council, Mr Yusuf Bello, made the appeal during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration held at Pantami Township Stadium, Gombe.
Bello said the economic realities affecting all workers made it imperative to implement the new wage. “Local government workers face the same economic hardship as their state counterparts and should not be left behind,” he said.
He commended the state government for its developmental strides but urged it to address pressing issues, including wage implementation, review of pensions, and manpower shortages.
Bello also called for an upward review of retirees’ pensions and suggested transferring personnel from local governments to state civil service to fill manpower gaps created by retirements and resignations.
In response, Deputy Governor Manassah Jatau affirmed the state’s commitment to workers’ welfare, noting the prompt payment of salaries and early adoption of the national minimum wage.
Jatau assured that the NLC’s demands were being considered. “Most of these concerns are already being addressed by the committee established for that purpose,” he said.
