Rivers NLC Demands Urgent Economic Reforms to Protect Workers’ Welfare

The Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the federal government to implement policies aimed at improving Nigeria’s economic conditions and, by extension, enhancing the living standards of workers.

The appeal was made by the State Chairman of the NLC, Mr. Alex Agwanwor, during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration held in Port Harcourt on Thursday. Speaking on behalf of various affiliated unions, Agwanwor emphasised the urgent need for the government to address pressing financial and welfare challenges facing workers across all sectors.

Key demands by the unions include the prompt payment of pension arrears, enforcement of the N32,000 minimum wage for pensioners, and the immediate settlement of outstanding gratuities and death benefits.

The labour leader also called for the regulation of the e-hailing sector to protect drivers, the timely implementation of promotions and salary reviews for civil servants, and the resolution of long-standing issues in the polytechnic education sector.

In a related political plea, Agwanwor urged President Bola Tinubu to reinstate the democratically elected Governor, Deputy Governor, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. He argued that restoring democratic governance in the state is essential for sustained development and harmonious labour relations.

Agwanwor further criticised the rising tax burden, escalating electricity tariffs, and the soaring cost of goods and services, which he said have drastically eroded workers’ purchasing power and quality of life.

“We appeal to the federal government to urgently implement measures that will alleviate the economic hardship facing Nigerians,” he said.
