Cross River Implements N70,000 Minimum Wage, Begins Clearing Pension Backlog

The Cross River State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising workers’ welfare as part of broader efforts to drive development across the state.

The government stated that, in addition to fully implementing the N70,000 minimum wage, it had created a more conducive working environment to enhance staff productivity.

Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, Commissioner for Information, gave the assurance during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar on Saturday.

According to him, the present administration has consistently pursued the clearance of promotion arrears and initiated the payment of gratuities owed to retirees since 2014.

“It is not true that Cross River has yet to implement the new wage law. In fact, implementation commenced on 1 December 2024,” he said.

Ekpang emphasised that the Otu administration was committed to building a productive workforce by prioritising workers’ welfare.

On unpaid gratuities, he acknowledged the financial burden inherited by the current administration but noted that tackling it remained a top priority.

“The government has already released N10 billion to clear part of the backlog. We are deeply concerned for our retirees who, after decades of service, deserve a dignified retirement, not hardship,” he said.

He stressed that workers, whether still in active service or retired, must be protected to encourage future generations to serve in government.
