The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, has called on construction workers to support policies that will foster a vibrant and sustainable construction sector in Nigeria.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Construction and Civil Engineering Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (CCESSA)’s ultra-modern national secretariat on Thursday in Kuje, Abuja, Dingyadi urged stakeholders to promote sustainable practices, invest in capacity development, and maintain high standards of professionalism and safety.
“The infrastructure we build today lays the foundation for tomorrow’s prosperity. Let us reaffirm our commitment to the growth of the construction industry, which is crucial to national development,” he said.
He also reaffirmed the government’s strong relationship with labour unions, acknowledging their role in maintaining industrial harmony.
The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, debunked the notion that construction engineers were responsible for building collapses, noting that no such incidents had been traced to registered professionals.
“Building collapses occur because quacks — untrained and uncertified individuals — are hired. In CCESSA, we have certified professionals who understand what it takes to build lasting infrastructure,” Osifo said.
He also condemned the casualisation of construction workers as a cost-cutting measure, describing it as a national tragedy.
CCESSA National President, Ayodeji Adeyemo, described the secretariat’s inauguration as a new chapter for excellence in the sector. He said the facility would serve as a hub for professional growth, collaboration, and innovation.
Adeyemo also announced the launch of two books on occupational health and safety, which he said would contribute to knowledge sharing and best practices in the industry.
