Weeks after staging a protest, staff at the National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, are still being forced to carry out official duties under trees, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
The workers, under the Joint Union Congress, had on 20 March held a rally to protest alleged poor working conditions, particularly having to work outdoors under trees at the National Theatre complex.
The Joint Union Congress comprises members of the Amalgamated Union of Public, Civil, Technical and Recreational Employees (AUPCTRE), and the Radio, Television and Theatre Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU).
The unions are demanding that the Federal Government relocate them to their offices, following the reported completion of renovation work on the theatre complex.
According to Mr. Omotola Babatunde, Lagos State Secretary of AUPCTRE (Federal Organ), all attempts to reach a resolution with the theatre’s management have failed.
“We are waiting for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to issue a 14-day ultimatum to the management,” Babatunde said on Tuesday in Lagos.
“The NLC meeting is still ongoing. We are expecting feedback soon,” he added.
