The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has disbursed N226.96 million in compensation to registered employees in its Enugu Region between January 2022 and December 2024. The funds cover work-related deaths, injuries, illnesses, and disabilities.
Managing Director of NSITF, Mr. Oluwaseun Faleye, disclosed this during the NSITF Special Day event at the ongoing Enugu International Trade Fair. He was represented by the Enugu Branch Manager, Mrs. Uzoamaka Oraegbu.
Faleye explained that under the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) of the Federal Government, the Fund provides financial support to dependants of deceased employees, covering up to 90 per cent of the deceased’s total remuneration.
He added that the ECS also supports the rehabilitation of injured employees and offers counselling services to facilitate their reintegration into the workforce.
“There is also provision for compensation in cases where injuries occur outside the normal workplace but in the course of official duties,” he said.
Highlighting recent interventions, Faleye revealed that NSITF paid N25 million in ECS compensation to a National Assembly staff member.
“To date, the Fund has paid a total of N226,975,582.97 as compensation to registered employees in the Enugu region,” he added.
According to him, the ECS is funded through a mandatory contribution of one per cent of each employee’s total emolument, paid by the employer to the NSITF.
In his remarks, President of the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA), Mr. Odeiga Jideonwu, commended the NSITF for its role in national development and its commitment to fair and guaranteed compensation for workers.
He noted that NSITF’s regulatory oversight had helped enforce safer work environments, which he described as crucial to improved productivity. He urged the organisation to intensify its efforts through inspections, capacity-building workshops, and awareness campaigns on workplace safety.
