‘First in Nigeria’ – Labour Hails Sokoto’s Swift Minimum Wage Implementation

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Sokoto State have applauded the state government for implementing the N70,000 minimum wage.

At a joint press conference on Wednesday in Sokoto, NLC State Chairman, Mr. Aliyu Jangul, and his NULGE counterpart, Mr Ibrahim Abubakar, debunked a recent claim by the NULGE National President, Mr. Ali Haruna-Kankara, that Sokoto was yet to implement the new wage structure.

According to them, Governor Ahmad Aliyu had fully implemented the new wage since January, making Sokoto the first state in Nigeria to do so.

“We were part of the verification committee that identified ghost workers—a necessary step before the new salary structure was introduced,” Jangul said.

The labour leaders praised the governor for his commitment to workers’ welfare and urged him to continue fostering a positive relationship with the workforce.
