Enugu Unveils Tractor Plant, Promises 3,600 Jobs

The Enugu State Government has inaugurated the Nortra Tractor Assembly Plant and Service Centre, a major agricultural investment expected to generate over 3,600 jobs and boost food production.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Mr. Patrick Ubru, disclosed this on Tuesday in Enugu during the delivery of 100 tractors by Danish firm, ODK Group, the state’s partner in the project.

Ubru said the facility, located in Enugu, would assemble and maintain tractors locally, thereby improving access to mechanised farming and enhancing productivity.

“This plant represents a key step in Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to transform agriculture. It will drive job creation, improve food security, and energise our economy,” he said.

The 100 tractors form part of the 1,000 pledged by the governor during his election campaign. Another 100 units are expected within 90 days, while the remaining 800 will be assembled at the new facility.

Ubru added that the government had already conducted field tests at the Akpawfu pilot farm in Nkanu East, confirming the tractors’ suitability for local terrain.

To ensure accountability, an Asset Leasing Company will be established to manage distribution. Access will be limited to registered farmers.

“We currently have over 66,000 registered farmers across 260 farm estates. This initiative will directly benefit them and open opportunities for commercial farming,” he added.

Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Enugu Chapter, Mr. Romanus Eze, commended the government, saying the tractors would empower youth and improve agricultural outputs.
