300 Lagos Women Gain Empowering ICT Skills Through Lawmaker’s Initiative

A Federal Lawmaker, Mrs. Kafilat Ogbara, has empowered 300 women from her constituency and other parts of Lagos with comprehensive Information and Communication Technology (ICT) training.

Speaking at the launch of the programme on Saturday, Ogbara, who represents the Kosofe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, highlighted her commitment to women’s empowerment as the driving force behind the initiative.

The training was conducted in partnership with New Horizons, an ICT training institution.

Ogbara explained that the ICT training programme aimed to equip women with essential skills for the modern economy, emphasising that the recruitment process had been transparent, giving all applicants equal opportunities to apply. Participants were selected based on their potential for ICT knowledge.

“The initiative aligns with the global Sustainable Development Goal 5, which advocates for gender equality. By empowering women, we create positive ripple effects that will benefit families, communities, and the nation at large,” said Ogbara, who also chairs the House Committee on Women’s Affairs and Social Development.

Ogbara further stated that the training would provide lasting empowerment, helping women become independent, innovative, and active contributors to society. She encouraged the participants to believe in themselves, remain confident, and understand that character was as important as qualifications for long-term success.

“As women, we must be determined, hardworking, and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth,” she said. “We must reject any notion that gender imposes limitations.”

Ogbara pledged to monitor the progress of the beneficiaries and explore ways to offer further support and provide necessary tools for their continued development.

Mr. Tim Akano, the CEO of New Horizons Nigeria, remarked that the training programme was designed to expose the women to the expansive IT ecosystem. It would allow them to identify skills suited to their individual interests and aptitudes.

“The curriculum covers various aspects of IT, such as coding, graphic design, and cybersecurity, providing a solid foundation for future expertise,” Akano said.

He also pointed out the significant economic potential of the initiative, noting the role of IT in the global economy and the wealth it generates. According to Akano, equipping youths and women with IT skills is a critical investment in building a robust economy, as online businesses require minimal initial capital.

Akano commended Ogbara’s past contributions, including her establishment of a well-equipped IT lab, demonstrating her commitment to providing essential resources for her constituents.

He explained that the 300 women were divided into six groups, each undergoing an intensive one-week training programme. The selection process ensured that all participants had an existing interest and foundational knowledge of IT, with each being a graduate, highlighting their potential for success in the field.

Akano expressed New Horizons’ pride in partnering with Ogbara on the initiative, recognising her dedication to empowering her constituents and ensuring a quality learning environment.

Two beneficiaries, Fauzia Salako-Sani and Damilola Obiriko, both class representatives, shared their gratitude and determination to maximise the opportunity.

Salako-Sani, a content provider and broadcast journalist, expressed her intention to use the skills gained to enhance her profession and contribute to the tech space. “I will encourage my peers to remain focused, committed, and practical in their learning, as this is a golden opportunity,” she said.

Similarly, Obiriko, a Brand Analyst and alumna of New Horizons, praised the institution’s training and environment. Interested in data analysis and cybersecurity, she stated that the training would significantly enhance her skills and make her a more in-demand professional.
