Commonwealth Business Women Africa Canvass Gender Equality in Development

The Commonwealth Business Women Africa (CBW Africa) has called on African governments to prioritise the economic empowerment of women as a critical step towards sustainable development and growth.

In a communiqué issued at the conclusion of its summit in Lagos, CBW Africa highlighted the urgent need for policies that ensure women’s full participation in economic activities. The communiqué, titled “The Lagos Declaration,” was signed by the organisation’s Continental President, Mrs. Ngozi Oyewole.

The summit, which convened women entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and stakeholders from across Africa, emphasised the importance of women’s leadership in driving sustainable development.

“Women are not just participants but leaders, innovators, and change-makers. It is essential to confront challenges head-on and demand equal representation in all sectors,” the communiqué stated.

CBW Africa urged African governments to implement mechanisms that promote women’s economic advancement, stressing that empowering women leads to stronger families, prosperous communities, and thriving nations.

The organisation also called for collaboration among stakeholders to drive sustainable development in key areas such as trade, health, wellness, technological advancements, informal sector growth, and clean energy solutions.

In line with the 2025 International Women’s Day theme, ‘Accelerate Action,’ CBW Africa announced plans to enrol one million girls in coding programmes. Other focus areas include reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in rural areas, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, supporting industrialisation policies, and eliminating early marriages.

The group stressed that achieving these objectives requires the commitment of governments, organisations, and individuals.
