Civil Servants Urged to Improve Efficiency for National Development

Federal civil servants in Oyo State have been urged to enhance productivity to foster an efficient public sector and boost economic growth.

Speaking at a seminar held in Ibadan on Thursday, experts highlighted that increased efficiency in public service is critical to national development. The event was organised by the Oyo State Office of the National Productivity Centre (NPC) in collaboration with the National Forum of Heads of Federal Establishments (NAFOHEADS).

Dr Stephen Adewumi, Chairman of NAFOHEADS in Oyo State, underscored the importance of work ethics, efficiency, and effectiveness in civil service. He lamented the outdated attitude of some government employees who become complacent after recruitment.

“We are in a period of transformation. Productivity must be prioritised, and civil servants must embrace a problem-solving approach to their work,” Adewumi stated.

A researcher at NPC, Mr Taofeek Badejo, emphasised the adoption of the “Kaizen” methodology, a Japanese concept for continuous improvement. He highlighted its principles of efficiency, low-cost enhancements, and structured problem-solving as crucial elements for Nigeria’s economic advancement.

Similarly, Mr Tope Eegunjobi, the Oyo State Coordinator for the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), spoke on the role of productivity in curbing corruption. He asserted that a transparent and accountable workforce enhances national development.

Chief Examiner at the National Business and Technical Education Board (NABTEB), Mrs Roseline Amande, also called for vocational skills development, stressing its potential in economic empowerment and innovation.
