UNESCO Urges TVET Collaboration to Accelerate Nigeria’s Digital Skills

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has called for greater collaboration with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) stakeholders to drive Nigeria’s digital transformation.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a two-day validation workshop in Abuja, UNESCO’s Head of Office in Nigeria, Mr. Albeit Mendy, emphasised the need for a national strategy to digitise TVET systems. Mendy, represented by Mr. Manish Joshi, Regional Coordinator for BEAR III, explained that the workshop was designed to develop a framework for the digital transformation of TVET in Nigeria from 2025 to 2027.

“This initiative aims to ensure that TVET systems across Africa are digitally transformed, empowering individuals to adapt to and contribute meaningfully in today’s evolving digital landscape,” he said.

Dr. Adenike Olodo, Director of Technology and Science Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, reiterated the ministry’s commitment to providing quality skills acquisition programmes for all young people, both in and out of school.

Digital transformation presents an unprecedented opportunity to expand TVET accessibility, enhance learning outcomes, and ensure that no young person is left behind, regardless of their location,” Olodo stated.

She urged stakeholders to collaborate closely with UNESCO and the ministry to ensure the successful implementation of the strategy.

Dr. Olagunju Idowu, Secretary-General of Nigeria’s National Commission for UNESCO, commended the workshop organisers for championing digital transformation in the country. Represented by Mrs. Eunice Ayara, Assistant Director at the commission, Idowu highlighted the importance of TVET institutions in providing equitable and inclusive access to skills training and employment opportunities.

“As the world undergoes rapid digital transformation, TVET institutions must be better positioned as vehicles for reaching a wider audience, enhancing learning quality, and improving employment prospects for Nigerian youths,” he added.
