The Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, has approved the employment of 267 health technicians to improve healthcare services across the state.
Announcing this on Monday, Alhaji Mamman Mohammed, the Director General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, in Damaturu, said the newly employed workers include 140 graduates from the Buni Scholars program.
In addition to the 140, who recently completed their studies in various medical science fields in India, Mohammed the newly-employed workers also included 127 health technicians who had been serving as volunteers in state health institutions.
He explained that the Buni Scholars consist of 43 graduates in Nursing, 43 in Pharmacy, 22 in Medical Laboratory Science, 24 in Radiology, 7 in Optometry, and one in Public Health, adding that the governor’s approval also covers medical technicians who had previously graduated but were working as volunteers.
These newly employed professionals will now be placed on the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), with the Buni Scholars on CONHESS 8 and the volunteer technicians on CONHESS 6/2.
Governor Buni’s administration has maintained a policy of automatically employing graduates from the Shehu Sule College of Nursing and Midwifery over the past five years, Mohammed noted.
Mohammed emphasised that this move aligns with the state’s commitment to improving healthcare access and strengthening manpower in hospitals and primary healthcare centres.
As part of ongoing healthcare reforms, the Yobe government has also upgraded several healthcare facilities, including the conversion of General Hospitals in Gashua, Potiskum, Geidam, and Buni Yadi into Specialist Hospitals. Additionally, eight Primary Healthcare Centres have been upgraded to General Hospitals, while the State Teaching Hospital has been equipped with modern medical facilities.
“The governor remains committed to making healthcare services more accessible and affordable for all residents of Yobe,” Mohammed stated.
