43% of Osun Youths Jobless as NYCN Rolls Out Free Skills Training

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has launched a free skills acquisition programme in Osun State amid rising youth unemployment, with new data revealing that 43% of young people in the state lack access to decent jobs and 36% struggle to secure start-up capital.

Announcing the initiative on World Youth Skills Day 2025, the NYCN said the scheme aims to empower youths through training in digital and artisan skills.

Speaking at a press briefing in Osogbo, NYCN’s Director of Employment and Job Creation, Enoch Ogunsanya

, said the council plans to collaborate with the Osun State Government to improve access to practical training and entrepreneurial support.

“Many young people are willing to work and contribute to economic growth, but they lack access to training, funding, and essential support systems,” Ogunsanya said.

Citing a recent NYCN survey, he noted that 43% of Osun youths are unemployed, while 36% face significant funding barriers. He also highlighted the marginalisation of rural youth, artisans, and students in empowerment initiatives.

Ogunsanya urged young Nigerians to embrace digital skills such as data analysis, cybersecurity, and innovation to remain relevant in today’s workforce. He described the new scheme as part of broader efforts to build an inclusive and economically active youth population.

“We have started rolling out strategic programmes across Osun, including free digital and artisan skills training. We are also working with partner organisations to ensure more inclusive and data-driven interventions,” he said.

He called on youths to join the initiative and encouraged the Osun State Government, led by Governor Ademola Adeleke, to continue supporting youth empowerment efforts.
